Reiki For Senior Dogs: How It Helped Finlay Find Comfort, Connection and Joy Again

When a beloved animal reaches their senior years, even the smallest changes can feel significant.
They may begin moving more slowly, sleeping differently, struggling with stairs or losing interest in some of the things they once loved. As their people, we start watching more closely and wondering what these changes might mean.
Are they uncomfortable? Are they still enjoying their life? Are they trying to tell us something? Is it time to begin preparing ourselves to say goodbye?
These were some of the questions Finlay’s family was carrying when they contacted me about Animal Reiki.
As an Animal Reiki Pracitioner and Teacher, I support animals and their people through many different stages in life -but working with senior animals holds a particularly special place in my heart.
When Things Began to Change
Finlay was 12 years old when he began receiving Reiki. He had recently started having difficulty getting up and moving around, and his family was becoming concerned that his time with them might be coming to an end.
“Before our sessions, we thought this might be the last week for Fin. We were starting to feel very upset and sad within the household.”
They decided to try Reiki with me after hearing positive stories from friends and local businesses throughout Lanark County. They had heard how Reiki had supported anxious, nervous and senior animals, and they wanted to better understand what Finlay might be experiencing.
More than anything, they wanted to know that they were supporting him in the way he needed most.
How Can Reiki Support a Senior Pet?
Reiki is a gentle, non-invasive energy practice that meets an animal exactly where they are.
There is nothing they need to do and nothing being asked of them. They remain in control of the experience and can choose where they would like to be, how close they wish to come and how they would prefer to receive.
For senior animals, Reiki may support:
Deep relaxation and more peaceful sleep
A greater sense of calm and emotional comfort
Relief from stress connected to physical or household changes
An improved ability to settle and rest
A deeper connection between the animal and their family
Emotional support for both the animal and the people who love them
Reiki does not replace veterinary assessment, diagnosis, pain management or medical treatment. It can be offered alongside veterinary care to provide another layer of comfort, connection and support.
Finlay’s First Reiki Experience
When I first met Finlay, I allowed him to decide how he wanted to connect with me and receive Reiki. He was laying on the floor so I grabbed a chair and pulled it up beside him. Often, I am on the floor with the animal when appropriate, but Fin needed me to be able to move about him with as little disturbance as possible - he was somewhat spread out on the floor in a way that looked like the only comfortable, but awkward position he could find.
There was nothing expected of him and no need for him to stay in one position. He could move around, rest, come closer or create more space whenever he needed to.
During his sessions, Finlay was calm and relaxed and mostly laid in front of me. He connected with me very quickly and continued reaching out to touch me with his paw.
His family began noticing changes after his very first session.
Finlay took himself outside and walked around—something he had been struggling to do in the days before. He began happily climbing the stairs again and even got himself back onto his mom’s king-sized bed, where he stayed for the entire night.
It was something he had not done in months.
His sleep appeared more peaceful, and he began waking up happy again.
Every animal experiences Reiki in their own way, and we never want to place expectations on what a session must look like or what it must create. For Finlay and his family, however, these changes brought meaningful moments of comfort, happiness and renewed connection.
Waiting in the Rain for His Truck Ride
There was one moment that stood out more than any other.
Finlay had always loved going for truck rides with his dad. As he grew older, though, those rides had become more difficult and had stopped being part of his usual routine.
A few days after his Reiki appointment, his family found him standing outside in the rain, waiting for his truck ride just as he used to.
And he had a wonderful time.
It may sound like a simple moment, but when you love a senior animal, seeing them ask for something they once enjoyed can mean everything.
Finlay was not only moving around more. He was showing his family that he was still here, still participating and still finding joy in his life.
As they shared:
“This has been the most rewarding experience—to watch our old boy find his groove again.”
Reiki Supports the People Who Love Them, Too
Caring for a senior animal affects the whole household.
When we believe goodbye may be approaching, it is very easy to begin grieving before our animal has actually left. We start watching for signs and worrying about every change.
Without realizing it, our fear of what may be coming can begin to pull us away from the life and love that are still right in front of us. We start to grieve them before they are gone.
Reiki gave Finlay’s family another way to understand and support this part of his journey.
“We learned so much about supporting Fin in a positive way as he moves toward his eventual journey across the Rainbow Bridge. It isn’t happening now, but this process has already made it easier to accept as the next stage of his life.”
The sessions helped them move away from anticipating the loss of Finlay and return their attention to loving the dog who was still very much there.
“I stopped thinking about losing my best boy and started thinking about all the amazing things he has done for our family. He deserves to have that happiness returned to him throughout every moment of his senior years.”
Returning the Love They Have Given Us
Reiki cannot stop the natural progression of aging, and we never want to promise a particular physical outcome.
What Reiki can do is create a gentle, supportive space where an animal can rest, receive and simply be exactly who and where they are in that moment.
It can also help their people slow down, become more present and listen in a different way.
Sometimes our senior animals need us to stop focusing only on what they can no longer do and notice what they are still showing us. There is still life to be lived, comfort to be offered and love to be shared—even as their needs begin to change.
Finlay’s family now holds a new appreciation for this part of his journey:
“It will still be sad when the time comes, but Reiki has given me a more positive way to understand the journey. His energy will always be part of me in some way.”
Our senior animals have spent their lives loving us, walking beside us and becoming part of our family stories. Supporting them through their later years is one of the most meaningful ways we can return that devotion.
Sometimes Reiki supports comfort and rest. Sometimes it creates emotional connection or reassurance. Sometimes it helps a family move out of fear and return to the present moment.
And sometimes, it helps an old boy feel ready to stand outside in the rain and ask for one more ride in his favourite truck.
Then another amazingly beautiful moment happened.
Finlay’s family sent me a photo of him standing while he ate—something they said he had not been able to do in years.
For many people, seeing a dog stand at his bowl may seem like an ordinary part of the day. But when you love and care for a senior animal, these moments are anything but ordinary. They become little celebrations—a reminder to notice what is possible today, rather than focusing only on what has changed with age.
Every animal experiences Reiki differently, and we never want to place expectations on what a session must create. But for Finlay and his family, seeing him comfortably standing at his bowl was another meaningful glimpse of their old boy finding his groove again.
