Reiki And The Science Behind Energy Medicine

Updated: May 2, 2023

Reiki is a form of energy medicine. It involves channeling the electro-magnetic fields that exist universally, and now proven by science, through the practitioner to the client.

The in-depth Reiki training I have received involved learning how to tune into, hold and transmute this energy from the Earth’s electro-magnetic field to yours. It is a tool to assist you in healing physical, mental and emotional issues.

We are all electro-magnetic beings who are impacted by not only our own energy in the physical, mental and emotional forms but from the environments around us on Earth and in space. Solar flares, for example, have been shown to impact us by making us feel more anxious or stressed out. https://liteonline.com/feeling-anxious-and-exhausted-blame-the-sun/

We Reiki practitioners act as conduits and do not use our own energy. There is no magic here, it is science-based. Reiki is not a replacement for traditional medicine but it works alongside it in coherence with it.

Science Behind Reiki

ENERGY

So what is this all about? Energy, my friends.

Energy can be defined as"...the strength and vitality required for sustained physical or mental activity.” Google

Energy exists in how objects interact with each other. Some energy is positive and some is negative. There are several types of energy but Reiki deals predominantly with electrical and magnetic.

Schumann’s Resonance

Winnifred Otto Schumann was a physicist who, in 1952, mathematically predicted the global electromagnetic resonance. Basically the space in between the Earth and space’s ionosphere creates a wave state that resonates frequencies. The Earth’s frequency has been measured to be 7.83Hz. Scientists call it the ‘tuning fork’ because it generates natural healing properties when living things are in rhythm with its frequency. The Basic Laws of Ampere’s Law

In physics, one of the basic laws in Ampere’s Law says when electrical currents flow through conductors they produce a magnetic field. The conductors can be wires or living tissue. When it’s living tissue, it creates a bio-magnetic field. So the muscles and ligament and all the other good stuff in our bodies can act as a conductor for this energy.

There are several medical devices used in Western medicine that measure frequencies in our bodies to find dis-ease or infrequencies such as MRIs or biofeedback machines that track our heart rate variabilities. Lasers are another cool device that uses fractions of light and different colours of light to treat disorders and help the body heal more quickly. Many therapists use low level light therapy to heal injuries using ultraviolet and infrared light. https://theralase.com/hello-world-2/ (this is a laser I used to use and love)

The Correlation Between Science, Reiki Energy & Healing

Health is the search for homeostasis of the body on many levels. A Reiki practitioner uses frequency and vibration to facilitate harmony within the body.

Through my training, I have become able to hold a certain vibrational frequency that is the same as the Earth’s bio-magnetic field and has been measured at 780-800 Mhz.

A researcher by the name Robert C. Beck used EEG readings to study the brain waves in Reiki practitioners while they were performing Reiki and found out that their brain waves were in the alpha state (which are perfect meditative wavelengths) and average between 780-800Mhz. That is why we call Reiki ‘Universal Life Force Energy’. https://www.equilibrium-e3.com/images/PDF/Science%20Behind%20Reiki.pdf

In the 1970s, bio-magnetic research showed that certain magnetic fields could stimulate growth processes in bone fractures that were difficult to heal. The frequency needed to do that was measured as 700Mhz.

As Bernadette Doran points out in her article ‘The Science behind Reiki’,

“Dr. John Zimmerman measured the magnetic field frequencies of Reiki practitioners and other energy therapists while they worked on clients, and found that they all emitted ELF frequencies from their hands. The range of that field was 0.3 to 30 Hz, the same range of frequencies associated with healthy tissue and organs. The frequency occurring most often in the hands of energy therapists was 7 Hz, the same frequency as the PEMF device approved by the FDA for stimulating bone growth. “In essence,” says Dr. Oschman, “the electromagnetic fields produced by a practitioner’s hands can induce current flows in the tissues and cells of individuals who are in close proximity.” Further evidence of this is documented in The Electricity of Touch by the Institute of HeartMath. https://www.equilibrium-e3.com/images/PDF/Science%20Behind%20Reiki.pdf

Wikipedia sums it up well when they explain “ In physics, energy is the quantitative property that must be transferred to an object in order to perform work on, or to heat, the object. Energy is a conserved quantity; the law of conservation of energy states that energy can be converted in form, but not created or destroyed. “

Energy & Water

Another amazing study about frequency and our bodies is from Dr. Masaru Emoto who studied Vibrational Medicine in Japan. He is more famously known for a movie called “The Secret of Water” in which he explains what he called ‘Hado’. Hado is a Japanese term that means ‘instrincal vibrational essence’. He believed that Hado was a vibrational wave that orbited the nucleus of an atom.

Dr. Emoto was able to show people that you could imprint water with a magnetic vibration and neutralize any disharmony in the body. And since we are 70% water - words, thoughts and emotions all were proven to have an impact on us. Through this study, Dr. Emoto and his team realized that the state of the person dealing with the water affected the outcome. His study was able to show that after directing a feeling, the same feeling over and over again to the vile of water with the word of that feeling printed on the outside, that the water would change to match the frequency of the emotion. Love is an emotion that has been measured at 528 Hz and fear has been measured at 19Hz. The colour and uniformity of the higher vibrational emotions were beautiful and the lack of colour or consistency of form in the lower vibrational emotions were dark and hard to distinguish.

A Reiki practitioner is able to hold a higher frequency and send in higher frequency energies to be shared with the willing recipient.

The FREQUENCY OF REIKI ENERGY

The energy that a Reiki practitioner can hold may seem subtle to you, but that is because it is coming from a higher electro-magnetic field than the physical body. It is from a higher vibrational range that can be beyond your five senses.

The practitioner is able to direct the vibrational energy to the client so that the client can self heal. It’s like charging your phone. Then, it is up to the client to accept their responsibility in their own well being and shift behaviours and actions so that they can heal. Just like you wouldn’t let your phone battery get too low or submerge it in water, you need to take care of your own energetic needs. Participants are asked to remain open and accept any healing vibrations coming their way.

THE FREQUENCY OF EMOTIONS

Have you ever walked into a room and just knew that someone just had a fight? Have you ever felt “off” for a day? Do you get emotional ‘over nothing’? Ever notice that a full moon makes people a little more intense?

We all have emotions. We all deal with them in different ways. When your emotions are not recognized for what they are, say anger or anxiety, then your body’s natural vibrational state holds onto the energy, because as we previously mentioned, energy cannot be destroyed but only transferred or become negative. This energy needs to go somewhere so it will store itself in various areas of your physical body and may affect your mood.

Many of us have committed to the idea that if you can’t see something, it may not exist. But frequency and vibration exist in all things and have been scientifically measured. Often we cannot see them without some sort of technology. That doesn’t mean you can’t feel them.

What about music? Do we not listen to music to feel ….something? Sad songs make you cry, songs with a quicker beat give you energy, chill songs make you relax. These songs do not need to have words to them. A hard drum beat allows us to release pent up energy and a melodic violin might make you become serene and happy. Music is the language of emotion. It is there for you when you cannot put how you feel into words. Using vibration, hearing impaired people can enjoy the energy of music too.

STRATEGIES TO INCREASE YOUR OWN FREQUENCY AND VIBRATION

This is fun to do because it involves finding out what makes you happy.

  1. LISTEN to your body, thoughts and feelings. If you are upset or if you are happy, take the time to recognize how you feel at that moment. What am I feeling? Where am I feeling it? (Does my head hurt? Stomach? Am I smiling and can’t stop?) Why am I feeling it? (My dog is the cutest living being in the world or ‘I really don’t want to go to my family dinner’). Whatever it is, listen and recognize it. The only way to figure out what works for you and what doesn’t is to go within and be honest with yourself.

  2. IDENTIFY what makes you happy & do it more often. Is it playing basketball? Going for ice cream with your Mom? Do these things more often. I mean it. Plan the event, put it in your calendar and make time to do things that bring you happiness. It is a good place to start.Another is to recognize when you are being negative with your thoughts and switch the feeling to a positive thought of gratitude. Mantras or affirmations are great tools to change your habitual cycle of negative thoughts. Positive thoughts create positive outcomes!

  3. Meditate. Meditate. Meditate. This is one of the KEY factors that can bring you into a better awareness with your own frequency and identify where you may be holding some negative energies. It is not as simple as just sitting there and not thinking. I believe that a great way to begin a meditation practice is to start with guided meditations that you can find on Youtube. It doesn’t have to be for an hour, in fact I would start off with a 5-10 minute practice every day (consistency is the key) and find someone who’s voice you like, who’s words help you to that silent place. One of my favorites is the Mindful Movement with Sara Redmond. https://themindfulmovement.com/

  4. Reiki Energy Healing. A great way to balance and harmonize your energy is to have a Reiki session. The practitioner will be able to send you energy that resonates the same frequency as the planet to help you feel more balanced and grounded. Working on Chakras, which are energy centres throughout your body, is a great way to manage and support your energy system. These are also fantastic ways to release and let go of energies that are holding you back from your dream life.

  5. Eat clean. Eating foods that are mass produced or chemically altered will affect the cells in your body causing inflammation and disease. If you eat clean, you will be able to nourish your body with nutrients needed for you to digest well, breath well, think well and move even better.

  6. Self-care. Take time for yourself. Allow yourself to not need to do anything. Make plans every week to do something for yourself that YOU enjoy - not your kids, not your spouse but for you. It can be whatever makes you feel better and loved. It doesn’t have to be for a whole day, because honestly, who has that kind of time?! Book off 2 hours for yourself and read a book, take a bath, talk to a friend you haven’t seen in a while - we have plenty of those these days. It is imperative that you take care of yourself because no one else will. We have all fallen into the trap of saying ‘Maybe later’ but unless you book that later, it’s probably not going to happen.

  7. Move. Moving, getting exercise however you like it, is a great way to burn off excess energy. Again, not asking for marathon running unless that is your thing, but at least 20 minutes a few times a day is fantastic for your body, mind and spirit. Going for a walk and spending time in nature is exactly what we all need everyday for us to breathe easy and find a connection to the world we live in. This way we tap into nature for a grounding and calming experience. Yoga, swimming, whatever makes you feel better and you enjoy is a great place to start.

  8. Gratitude. Last but not ever least. Practice gratitude. What does that mean? There are several ways to do this but I like to start my day with being grateful for 10 minutes before I even get out of bed. I think of people, places, things, events that I am thankful for. Not just run a list through my head but name something/someone and feel the feeling that you receive from the object you are grateful for. I repeat this strategy again when I go to bed. Throughout the day, I like to keep my awareness open to the world around me and find gratitude in many things I may have dismissed before like the sound of a loon or the smell of a Lilac bush or the fact that I am loved. I am also extending my gratitude to those I interact with everyday. Kindness goes a long way and you never know what someone else is going through.

GROWING & IMPROVING YOUR WELL-BEING

It is my hope that you will become more energetically aware of yourself and know that we all have this energy within us. The key is to be open to it and investigate your own energy. We store a lot of information within our physical bodies from memories in the form of energy. Some can be good and some bad. We must acknowledge and address them all for our growth and well-being. Stay safe, my friends! Know that you are the creator of energy when you are aligned and grounded.
